Vintage guitars have recently become a big industry. New magazines like Guitar Aficionado attest to the popularity and the status of vintage guitars. If you peruse a copy of Guitar Aficionado you will see articles about vintage guitars surrounded by advertising for Rolex watches and Porsche automobiles. This is obviously becoming a hobby and passion for the well-heeled in our society.
Not to say that there is not an opportunity for us of more humble means to participate in the joy of vintage guitars. You just have to be a little bit creative. Instead of attending an auction at Christie's and bidding on Eric Clapton's favorite Stratocaster, you'll be visiting your local pawn shops and surfing eBay and Kijiji.
So what exactly is a vintage guitar? Well, the term originated in the wine industry to indicate the date of harvest. The term is a blend of Vint (of the vine) and Age (time of creation). The term vintage is now applied to cars, guitars, clothing and numerous other markets and suggests an older, unique and valuable item.

In the case of guitars, most collectors seem to prefer guitars built in the 1900s, although, many collectors are also interested in the early guitars from the 18th and 19th centuries such as those built by early luthiers such as Stauffer, Lacote, Panormo and Torres.
When you are shopping around for a vintage guitar, keep in mind that guitars with their original parts are the most desired. Any alterations the instrument will dramatically decrease the value.
The most common alterations are a refinished body or a replaced or repaired headstock. Either of these alterations will probably reduce the value by about 50%.
If you are serious about getting into collecting vintage guitars as an investment, then do your homework. Serious investment quality guitars are not cheap. Late 1950s Les Paul guitars, for example, can get into the $400,000 range.
